If you are serious about yoga, whether you are just starting to think about teaching or you have been practising for years, you have probably come across the term YCB certification. But what exactly is it? Who gives it? How many levels are there? And why does it matter so much?
Let us walk you through everything, clearly and honestly, because as yoga teachers ourselves, we believe you deserve accurate information before making one of the most important decisions of your yoga journey.
What is the Yoga Certification Board (YCB)?
The Yoga Certification Board (YCB) is an official body established in 2018 by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. AYUSH stands for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy.
Before YCB was created, yoga teaching in India was largely unregulated. Anyone could call themselves a yoga teacher regardless of their training or knowledge. The YCB was set up to change that, to bring standardisation, quality, and credibility to yoga education across India and beyond.
Through the YCB, the Government of India now conducts formal examinations and issues certificates to yoga professionals who meet its standards. These certificates carry the weight of the Indian government; the government of the very country where yoga was born.
Think of YCB the way you would think of a board exam. It is the government's official way of saying: this person has been tested, they meet the national standard, and you can trust them as a yoga professional. |
The Complete YCB Certification Pathway - All 7 Levels
The YCB has designed a structured progression that takes a student from basic yoga awareness all the way to advanced therapeutic consultancy. There are 7 formal levels in total, divided across two pathways: Teaching and Therapy.
Teaching Pathway: Levels 1 through 4
Therapy Pathway: Levels 5 through 7
Here is each level explained in detail, along with where Ayushman Yog fits in your journey.
Level 0- Yoga Volunteer- This is the introductory awareness programme offered by YCB. It is not a professional teaching qualification. It is designed for yoga enthusiasts who want to understand yoga fundamentals, learn the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), and contribute to community yoga programmes and events like International Yoga Day.
There is no formal written examination at this level. A completion certificate is awarded by YCB.
At Ayushman Yog: While we do not offer a dedicated Yoga Volunteer programme, we recommend our self-paced learning options for anyone who wants to build a solid foundation before committing to a full certification journey.
YCB Level 1- Yoga Protocol Instructor- This is the first professional-level certification, your entry point into the world of yoga teaching. It covers 40+ asanas, pranayama, kriyas, introductory philosophy (Patanjali, Bhagavad Gita, Hatha texts), basic anatomy and physiology, and teaching skills for conducting group sessions safely and effectively.
Eligibility- Open to whoever is willing to learn. Our youngest student of Level 1 was 12 years of age, and senior most student was 65 years of age.
Weightage- Successful aspirants can start their own classes, and also apply in studios, gyms, etc. ]
YCB Level 2- Yoga Wellness Instructor- This level moves beyond the basics into preventive healthcare and wellness. You will learn many postures with modifications, Shatkarmas, lifestyle applications for different groups, advanced philosophy, advanced anatomy, and structured class design.
Eligibility- Open to whoever is willing to learn.
Weightage- This certificate is accepted for govt jobs in govt schools such as Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya etc.
YCB Level 3- Yoga Teacher & Evaluator- An advanced certification that qualifies you not just to teach, but to evaluate other yoga students and professionals. The syllabus covers asanas, pranayama, mudras and bandhas, deep study of yoga texts (Patanjali, Upanishads, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita), assessment methods, and introduction to therapeutic yoga.
Eligibility- Open to whoever is willing to learn
Weightage- This certificate is highly accepted in govt schools, embassies, YCB panels, etc.
YCB Level 4- Yoga Master- This level involves intense philosophy learning, including rare yoga upanishad, which were not part of earlier levels. It also includes mastery of several yoga practices, anatomy, and more insight into therapeutic yoga. A Yoga Master is qualified to design teacher training curricula, guide research projects, and hold academic or institutional leadership positions.
Eligibility- While the preparation is open to all, we strongly recommend completing YCB Level 3 first. Level 3 builds the philosophical foundation you will need to absorb the depth of Level 4 content. Jumping directly to Level 4 without that foundation can make the learning experience overwhelming rather than enriching..
Weightage- This certificate holds the value of a master's degree. Skilled professionals can teach, evaluate & assess for all categories of certification under Yoga Training and Education & will be a guiding force.
The Therapy Pathway, Levels 5, 6, and 7, is where yoga meets healthcare. These levels are for those who want to progress in senior fitness, injury rehabilitation, work in clinical, hospital, or therapeutic settings, helping people manage and recover from specific health conditions through yoga. |
YCB Level 5- Assistant Yoga Therapist- This is the entry point into the therapy pathway. The syllabus includes the foundation of therapy, usage of blocks and props, patient handling under supervision, an introduction to Ayurveda and naturopathy
Eligibility- Minimum Level 1 Yoga TTC
Weightage- Honestly, this syllabus only includes foundational knowledge; this certificate alone might not be enough to get jobs in a clinical setting. But still a good entry point without overwhelming the student. This serves as a prep for YCB Level 6 or YCB Level 7.
YCB Level 6- Yoga Therapist- Level 6 is where yoga and healthcare genuinely converge, and it is one of the most rigorous, intensive, and rewarding certifications in the entire YCB framework.
At this level, you are trained as a professional yoga therapist, qualified to work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, AYUSH wellness centres, and clinical settings. The curriculum is deep, demanding, and transformative. You will learn anatomy, physiology of various practices, biomechanics, and proper management of several health conditions.
Eligibility- Minimum Level 1 Yoga TTC
Weightage- One of the most intense learning experiences offered by YCB. The certificate enables you to work along with a certified physician to give Yoga Therapy on all disorders
YCB Level 7- Yoga Consultant- The highest level in the YCB framework. A Therapeutic Yoga Consultant is qualified to conduct research, lead clinical programmes, train other yoga therapists, and act as a consultant in healthcare institutions. This is the pinnacle of the YCB journey, a credential that places you at the intersection of yoga, medicine, and research.
Eligibility- Medical Professional or Master's in Yoga.
Weightage- Can practice Yoga for the treatment of diseases in medical setups or independently. Aspirant should be a registered medical practitioner in any stream with Yoga Therapy.
Teaching vs Therapy - Which Path is Right for You?
One of the most common questions we hear from aspiring yoga professionals is: Should I focus on the Teaching pathway or the Therapy pathway?
Before we answer that, here is something important that most people don't realise.
The Reality of Being a Yoga Teacher
In real life, there is very little distinction between a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist. The moment you become a certified yoga teacher, you will find that the majority of people who approach you are dealing with common health issues such as back pain, arthritis, diabetes, stress, hormonal imbalances, and more. It doesn't matter what your designation says. Students and clients expect you to know what to do.
This is why your choice of school matters as much as your choice of level.
Choose Your School Wisely
Some schools, like Ayushman Yog, integrate Disease Management into every level of training, from Level 1 through Level 4. This means that even where the official YCB syllabus has limitations, their students don't. Every graduate receives the knowledge and practical tools to address common health conditions confidently, regardless of the level they have certified at.
We strongly recommend choosing a school that takes this holistic approach to yoga education. Yoga, in its truest form, has always been a complete system, one that addresses the body, breath, mind, and spirit together.
Now- Which Pathway is Right for You?
Choose the Teaching Pathway (Levels 1-4) if you want to:
Teach yoga in studios, schools, corporate settings, or online
Run your own classes or yoga teacher trainings
Build a career as an educator within the yoga ecosystem
Choose the Therapy Pathway (Levels 5-7) if you want to:
Work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, or AYUSH wellness centres
Help people manage specific health conditions through structured yoga therapy
Build a clinical or healthcare-adjacent yoga career
Consider Both Pathways if you want to:
Become a complete, well-rounded yoga professional
Serve both general students and those with health needs
Build long-term credibility and career resilience
The good news? The YCB framework is specifically designed to support professionals who wish to pursue both pathways. You are not choosing one over the other permanently; you are choosing where to begin.
Why Does YCB Certification Matter?
1. It is government-issued- No other yoga certification in India has the backing of the central government. YCB certificates are issued by the Ministry of AYUSH, the same ministry that oversees India's traditional health and wellness systems. That level of credibility simply cannot be matched by any private certification body.
2. It is nationally and internationally recognised- Studios, wellness centres, hospitals, schools, and corporate organisations across India are increasingly requiring YCB-certified professionals. Internationally, because YCB comes from the Government of India, the birthplace of yoga, it carries genuine global credibility.
3. You are listed in an official national directory- Once you clear your YCB exam, your name appears in the Certified Yoga Professionals directory on the YCB website, publicly searchable, independently verifiable by anyone who wants to hire or study with you.
At Ayushman Yog, our students receive an Ayushman Yog Certificate of Completion the moment they finish their course, which is fully valid for professional teaching right away. The YCB certificate follows once you clear the government examination. You never have to wait to begin teaching. |
